Bentzy's Adobe Fort Backwoodsman is made from a blend of high heat cured Burley and Latakia. Tasting notes are earth, smoke, leather and wood, with background notes of pine and fir. There is no menthol or other cooling agent in the blend.

The colour is mocha brown with tan speckling. The snuff has a medium grind and medium moisture, and the nicotine is strong. It is taken in small, deliberate pinches.

This snuff has enough moisture to hold easily in the hand and, when paired with its scent profile and nicotine content, is approachable by most. Some people may find the nicotine kick and more natural smoky notes hard to enjoy, but in the right ratio and a deliberate pinch, it makes this snuff worth any struggle.

Out of the tin it presents with a bold, dark, and musty aroma. The profile is distinctly smoky, with layers of worn leather and subtle notes of essential wood oils beneath. I get cedar or birch, perhaps even another lightly scented wood, but nothing comes across as overtly aromatic. Instead, the smoky nature envelops everything, binding the leather, wood, and musty tobacco together into a dark, rustic profile. There is no ammonia or funk that can be found in Thor's Hammer, but instead a smoke-kissed leaf that holds the centre ground.

The tobacco itself is a light-to-moderate mocha brown with noticeable tan speckling throughout. Moisture is present in the pouch, with moderate clumping, and in the hand this tobacco fits well in the anatomical snuffbox. It's a medium-grind snuff with a somewhat soft nature, a hair coarser than a traditional English snuff. This snuff carries with it a more than ample amount of Vitamin N (RIP Simon), which for me produced a post-nasal drip I associate with stronger snuffs, and provided me with a firm lift of energy in the afternoon and throughout the day. The scent profile is plentiful and carries well in the nose, as does the nicotine, which makes its presence known alongside the heavier tobacco character.

This snuff brings to mind the leather chaps of a woodsman who has just struck a flint and steel, or perhaps just removed an ash cake from the fire and is resting in his leathers as the sun wanes in the distance. In the air, there is the slightest hint of what was once birch, cedar, or another lightly aromatic wood. The best snuffs paint a scene, and this snuff did just that. Another winner in the Adobe Fort line, the notes of smoked leather and earth are uniquely blended in a way that leaves me wanting to keep this tin in my daily rotation.
