A take on the Hannover-style recipe, made with burley leaf and woodruff in place of sweet clover. Both plants get their scent from coumarin.
0 of 5 steps done
You'll need Tick as you go 1/4 cup burley tobacco flour, ground and sieved dry 2 teaspoons woodruff tea (2 teaspoons of dried woodruff steeped in water, then strained) 1/8 teaspoon sodium carbonate 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar 1/2 teaspoon salt Method Step 1 of 5 Steep the woodruff and strain the tea.Step 2 of 5 Dissolve the sodium carbonate and cream of tartar completely in the tea.Step 3 of 5 Work the tea into the flour thoroughly, scraping the bowl to get an even mix. You should smell ammonia straight away.Step 4 of 5 Seal it in a jar (about half full) and keep it at about 110°F (about 43°C) for 12 hours. A towel warmer works.Step 5 of 5 Let it cool to room temperature, then mix in the salt.Notes The woodruff tea is only lightly scented. It's there to moisten the tobacco for fermenting rather than to scent the finished snuff, and tonka bean would work in its place. Keep sodium carbonate off your skin and out of your eyes.
