Rooster is an American scotch snuff has a barbecue flavor that captures the distinct Southern Carolina smoky, spicy and acidic tastes that compliment a perfect sauce. These combine with the pungent bite, the smoky scent of charred apple wood wafting over slathers of molasses and spices to give a uniquely American expression to this blend. All these notes are slyly hidden behind an overpowering introduction of intense heat emanating from this light colored, silky fine grind and bone dry powder hitting the inner nasal passages. The first sniff will be devastating unless precaution and restraint are used. The amount of nicotine delivered is surprising and may require a seat. Take a small pinch and happy snuffing.

Lexington Bar-B-Que!

Sadly it seems this bad boy has been discontinued by US Smokeless, what a shame! Correct me if I'm wrong....However, I was able to get some plastic 4.65oz thrift cans on eBay (without the warning label) so thankfully I am able to finally try this treat. By far their smokiest snuff, and one of the most authentic BBQ smoke scotches out there. Swisher's Square is smokey but more in a camp/bonfire way, this is straight North Carolina Lexington BBQ tang! It is less acrid than the comparable Bruton but smokier still. If it's smoke you're after, this is a must try, but it seems you may have to hunt down on eBay to try it. Strong as heck and dry as a bone, this is a killer American Scotch.

Favorite Mixer

In my opinion, Rooster is best used as a mixer. It is good for adding kick to the fruit snuffs I tend to use during the day. Since the snuffs I use for mixers are coarser ground and moist, this approach also makes this snuff easier to take.

It is in error to think the smokey flavor is artificial in any way, though I won't argue that it may taste that way to some. Along with all other scotch--or more properly scorched--snuffs, they are flu cured, which means using a hardwood fire. If you pinch up a cigarette (at least an American one) and carefully smell the tobacco, it has that same smokey odor; it too is flu cured.

Flu curing kicks up the nicotine, along with the very fine grind. The downside to flu-cured tobacco is that it is what causes the formation of TSNA's--at least according to Brad Rodu, who studies such things.

I'd be curious to know how English and German snuffs are cured. I would guess both air cured, which means hanging the leaf in a barn. If so, this technique produces few TSNA's.

On the other hand, scotch snuff dipping for women has been out of style for many decades in the southern US. The fact that it is still available at all suggests that its remaining users are living to a ripe old age. Maybe the TSNA's aren't that harmful.

In any case, it is stronger than the HDT's, and serves its purpose. Highly recommended with the above provisos.

Unmatched Nic Hit

If you are looking for the extreme sports world of snuff this has to be it. This is the only snuff i have ever taken that dropped me to my knees and had me crying for mother. Small pinches are all you need. The nicotine content of this snuff is unmatched in my experience. Very fine grind with little to no moisture. You will be transported to a bluegrass party in the deep woods of Kentucky upon sniffing this. Smokey and unforgiving, this is not for the beginner. Once you have tried this snuff however, it will become the standard to which all toasts are compared.

Bad To The Bone

Dry as a bone and fine as the ashes around it, Rooster has an appeal that should go beyond the usual hardcore tag. Yes, it is hard to take and the campfire smell might not suit everybody; but there is a lot more to it. Like its cousin Bruton, it has an acrid, earthy undertone that is unique among the Scotches. The love-it-or-hate-it barbecue smell that so many talk about is to this nose more of an open fire scent, smoky but never sweet, that stays in the nose and develops into a full-blown dark-fired leaf flavor with vague reminiscences of leather and coal.

The very high leaf to stalk ratio results in a strong nicotine punch and a texture quite unlike any European varieties. It is also nice to see the American brands sticking to the tight-sealing cylindrical containers.

The Vanilla Bean

Powerful extra fine snuff. Strong long lasting smoke flavoring. Reminds me of imitation smoke flavor. I picked some up to try because of someone raving about its nicotine strength. They were not mistaken, this stuff is strong. It's a little hard to take being so fine and dry. I use as a mixer or add a vanilla bean to give it some humidity and tone down the initial artificial smell.
